What has been your military spouse career/entrepreneur journey so far?
I was working as a school principal up until 2022 when I married my husband became a military spouse. Once we got married, I started taking my business seriously. I was just booking a couple of events a year at first, but now I'm consistently booking multiple events most months.
Tell us about yourself.
My name is Vimbo, and my husband and I are currently based in DC. I have worked in education for the past decade, and a couple of years ago, I started a speaking business. I love to encourage other people to embrace every day wellness and true self-care. My husband and I enjoy traveling and hosting people in our home.
Tell us about a "typical" day in your professional life.
A typical day in my professional life is working on my remote job as the director of a nonprofit. I work on writing grants, connecting our donors, and managing our operations. For my business, I work on scheduling and preparing for presentations to share with groups of women in corporate and educational settings. These presentations focus on the topic of practical self-care, and what true wellness looks like. The work looks different from day to day.
Finding employment after moving and building community.
How does your career path differ from what you imagined for yourself?
I originally thought I would likely be an elementary school principal until retirement, but it is a more difficult job to hold if you move a lot.
How did military life (PCSing, deployments, trainings, etc) factor into your career decisions?
I needed a long-term solution that would be a mobile job.
What resources have you found to be useful in your career/entrepreneur journey?
Other Military spouses
Final word: what are your top tips for other military spouses about navigating a career within the military lifestyle?
I would encourage people to look for and take advantage of the free networking events, both in person and online to start connecting with others. Just by being connected on LinkedIn, I see a lot of job opportunities available to military spouses every day.
