What has been your military spouse career/entrepreneur journey so far?
Stroke Talks began after having a severe stroke in 2021 at my husband's farewell party. I officially launched it this year, 2024. MilSpouse Conversations started as an idea in 2020, becoming a business in 2022 with sponsorship from USAA. Mamas and Coffee®? was a passion project that brought me joy.
Tell us about yourself.
My name is Sybil and I am currently stationed in Bahrain. I'm a mother of 3 teen daughters, stroke warrior and lover of life. I'm a Navy wife of 21 years and love spreading joy to others.
Tell us about a "typical" day in your professional life.
I roll out of bed at 10:15 am and am dressed and in my home office by 11 am. I check email, social media, and create content. 1 pm is playtime for the Joy Manager. Then it is back to content…social, web content. I then plan marketing, and sales pitches. I also spend some me time out by our pool and beach (we live in Bahrain). I may work until 11 pm some days to accommodate ET. And some days I'm up working at 3/4 am for our virtual events.
If you've been stationed overseas, how did this affect your career and or business?
Being overseas helped my businesses. Mamas and Coffee®? did well overseas as it brought women together for life conversations and support. Now that I'm in Bahrain and transferring operations of MilSpouse Conversations the hardest part has been the timezone, as my team are all in the US.
What has been your biggest military spouse career struggle and how did you overcome it?
I was always able to find a job. I made the decision to stay home with our children out of a personal decision of wanting to be home with our kids. My biggest overall struggle has been on the entrepreneur side.
What role did mentors and sponsors play in your journey?
Encouragement to never change who I am.
How does your career path differ from what you imagined for yourself?
I had dreams of being a big executive within the logistics community, as my degree is in Logistics. But love my entrepreneurial journey, as I can take my businesses with me and pour joy into others.
How did military life (PCSing, deployments, trainings, etc) factor into your career decisions?
After 19 years of looking for a face and voice that looked and sounded like mine in the larger milspouse platforms, I wanted to bring and show true diversity within the community. As well as provide a space for milspouses to truly BE who they are.
Have you ever had to geo-bach due to your career/entrepreneurship?
No
What resources have you found to be useful in your career/entrepreneur journey?
The Rosie Network
Final word: what are your top tips for other military spouses about navigating a career within the military lifestyle?
If you have a dream, go for it. Don't let the naysayers stop you from building your dreams.
