2012 Tips from the NMSN Experts

Sue HoppinSue Hoppin (Networking and Military Lifestyle)

Invest in yourself. Order business/networking cards if you haven't already.  Identify some professional development opportunities (conferences, classes, etc...), sign up and attend.   Learning and networking don't end once you have a job, you have to continue with both to stay up to date on the newest trends and keep those contacts fresh.

See obstacles as opportunities.  You know things don't always go as you expect or want them to. You don't get a job you wanted. You get transferred in the middle of one you love. You have a hard time getting a job altogether. You may lack the required qualifications or you have too many of them and employers are too intimidated to interview you much less hire you. If it's not one thing, it's another. Those obstacles, however, can be potential life and career enhancing possibilities disguised as opportunities. You just have to be willing to see them as such.

Find a "relaunch buddy" or "relaunch circle" - a friend or group of friends you meet with once a week who all have the goal of relaunching careers.  You will be more accountable and keep up your momentum if you approach the process with a friend or a group than if you try to do it on your own. January is a great time to start this effort - new year, new goal!

For those military spouses who are considering starting their own business in 2012 you probably already have an idea of what you want to sell and who you want to sell it to.  Now take some time to get clarity around your mission or purpose.  Can you explain why you are so driven to do what you are going to do?  Why should someone buy from you instead of your competitors?  Why should anyone work for you other than just for the paycheck?
